Find Your Civilian Job Titles

Job Titles are Keywords to Search For Job Candidates

Military job titles are a constant. They have been constant for centuries. Captain. Commander. Chief Petty Officer. Sergeant Major. On the other hand, civilian job titles are fluid and in some ways are meaningless because the title does not always suggest the duties of the job's holder.

Civilian job titles have one quality that military titles do not have: they are database search keywords. Today, most resumes are searched for and found in resume databases that online job boards host. In the past, employers used to collect paper resumes and place them in a file they kept for 90, 120 or 180 days and then tossed them into the circular file after that to only begin again.

To search for a candidate, employers will commonly use a job title and a location to do a search. Or a specific skill and job title in a location. So, the job title is very important for you to be found in a database.

You need to find a list of compatible civilian titles for the job you are seeking. These titles will have variations. By searching for jobs with your skills-keywords, make a list of all the job titles that pop up. Then, read the job ads to determine which titles most closely match the job you are at least 75 percent qualified for.
